From: Abdulkadir Mohammed
Abuja, The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has dismissed as null and void a purported meeting held by a group of individuals claiming to be members of the party, which purported to suspend the party's chairman, Alh. Shehu Gabam, and other party members. The party describes the meeting, presided over by Dr. Sadiq, as illegal and a gross violation of the party's constitution. In a statement signed by A.J Baba, Esq, ACIAarb (UK), Special Assistant (Legal) to the Chairman, Social Democratic Party (SDP), the party said: "We state unequivocally that the said meeting is ILLEGAL, NULL AND VOID, and of no effect whatsoever. Article 13 (iv) of the Constitution of the Social Democratic Party is clear and unambiguous: 'The Chairman shall preside over the meetings of the National Convention, National Executive Committee, National Working Committee and National Caucus'. The purported meeting presided over by Dr. Sadiq, without the consent or authority of the duly recognized Party Chairman, Alh. Shehu Gabam, is a gross violation of the Party's Constitution and a brazen attempt to usurp the powers and authority of the Chairman."
The SDP has attached a Certified True Copy (CTC) from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), showing the recognized leadership of the party, with Alh. Shehu Gabam as the chairman. The party says the purported suspension of the chairman and other members is null and void, and of no effect whatsoever.
The party has also accused the secretary, who is currently facing trial for forgery and other related fraudulent acts, of lacking the moral standard to accuse loyal party members of any wrongdoing. The SDP says the secretary ought to have resigned to prove his innocence in court.
The SDP has described Dr. Sadiq as neither a member of the party nor a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC), and therefore has no authority to preside over any meeting of the party. The party has advised the general public to disregard the actions of the Dr. Sadiq-led group as they are impostors and will be duly punished by law for their illegal actions.
The SDP remains committed to upholding the rule of law and the constitution of the party, and will take all necessary steps to protect its integrity and reputation. The party says the Alh. Gabam leadership is committed to building the party and strengthening the nation's democratic ideals in partnership with other party loyalists.
The SDP has warned that it will not tolerate any attempts to undermine the party's integrity and reputation, and will take decisive action against anyone found to be engaging in such activities.
