From: Faith Johnson
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the politicization of a legal dispute involving alleged defamatory social media posts related to business and land transactions. In a statement signed by NANS Senate President, Dist. Sen. Usman Adamu Nagwaza CNS (Don Manu), the association expressed deep concern over attempts to drag the name of the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, into the matter.
NANS emphasized its commitment to human rights, democratic ideals, and the rule of law while cautioning against the misuse of social media, which can cause irreparable damage to individuals and institutions. The association's fact-finding committee found no connection between Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas and the legal actions taken against the accused persons.
NANS urged all parties involved to exercise restraint, respect the legal process, and refrain from spreading misinformation. PRESS STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS)
Condemnation of Politicization of Legal Dispute and Unjust Drag of Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas’ Name into Unrelated Matter
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the apex and most respected students' body in Nigeria, has observed with deep concern the ongoing controversy surrounding the arrest and prosecution of some individuals over alleged defamatory social media posts related to business and land transactions. While we recognize the right of aggrieved parties to seek legal redress, we are deeply worried about the deliberate politicization of this matter and the unwarranted dragging of the name of the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, into a purely civil dispute.
Our Position:
NANS has always been at the forefront of defending the rights and interests of Nigerian citizens, particularly the youth. We remain unwavering in our commitment to human rights, democratic ideals, and the rule of law. However, while we uphold the fundamental right to freedom of expression, we are also conscious of the dangers posed by the misuse and abuse of social media privileges. False allegations, defamation, and incitement can cause irreparable damage to individuals and institutions, and as responsible citizens, we must discourage such acts.
That said, we are deeply disturbed by the reckless attempt by certain individuals and groups particularly in Zaria and its environs to politicize this issue by falsely linking the Speaker of the House of Representatives and his wife to the arrests. Our Fact Finding committee has thoroughly investigated the matter, and it is categorically clear that Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas has no connection whatsoever with the legal actions taken against the accused persons.
Unjust Politicization and Its Dangers
It is unfortunate that some elements have chosen to exploit this situation to tarnish the reputation of an innocent public servant for cheap political gains. The Speaker, a respected leader who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, does not deserve such malicious insinuations. The attempt to drag his name into this matter is not only unjust but also a dangerous precedent that could undermine public trust in our democratic institutions.
NANS strongly condemns this trend of weaponizing social media to spread falsehoods and manipulate public sentiment. We urge all parties involved to exercise restraint and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions. Instead of resorting to sensationalism and character assassination, we encourage dialogue and legal due process in resolving civil disputes.
Call for Restraint and Constructive Engagement:
In the spirit of justice and fairness, NANS calls on all stakeholders, including the media, civil society organizations, and the general public, to:
1. Stop the spread of misinformation linking the Speaker to this case, as it is baseless and politically motivated.
2. Respect the legal process and allow the courts to adjudicate the matter without interference or undue influence.
3. Promote responsible use of social media by verifying facts before sharing sensitive information.
4. Embrace dialogue as a more effective means of resolving civil disputes rather than resorting to defamation and public blackmail.
Reaffirming Our Commitment to Fundamental Rights: While we caution against the misuse of social media, NANS remains steadfast in defending the constitutional rights of Nigerians, including the freedom of expression. However, freedom comes with responsibility, and we must all strive to use our platforms constructively, not as tools for character assassination or political vendettas.
In conclusion, NANS stands for truth, justice, and the protection of the rights of all Nigerians. We urge those fanning the embers of this crisis to desist immediately and allow the law to take its course. The Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, as a lawmaker of repute, deserves respect and fairness, not unfounded allegations aimed at maligning his hard earned integrity.
We remain vigilant in monitoring developments around this issue and will not hesitate to speak out against any form of injustice or political manipulation.
