DRUG SHORTAGE CRISIS: NYCN DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY FROM FTH GOMBE

From: John Faith The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has condemned the alarming shortage of drugs at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) Gombe, despite receiving 130 million Naira from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). This situation has caused immense suffering and hardship for the community, with patients unable to access essential medications.

According to Mu'azu Hina, organising Secretary of the NYCN, the situation is "unfortunate and regrettable." He called for an urgent investigation into the matter, demanding accountability from FTH management, led by Dr. Yusuf M Abdullahi, to provide a detailed account of how the allocated funds were spent.

The community deserves transparency regarding the management of their health resources and why drug availability hasn't improved. As Chief Medical Director, Dr. Yusuf is responsible for ensuring effective allocation of funds for pharmaceutical resources. However, unclear budget management and distribution raise concerns.

The severe consequences of this drug shortage must be recognized by the government. Patients are forced to buy medications from private pharmacies at inflated prices, leading to financial strain and limited access to vital treatments. Vulnerable groups, such as low-income families and individuals with chronic conditions, are disproportionately affected.

The NYCN emphasizes that patients frequently face financial hardship and untreated medical conditions due to expensive private pharmacy prices. Despite substantial funds allocated for drug procurement, FTH has failed to maintain a reliable supply of essential medications.

To address this crisis, the NYCN urges Dr. Yusuf M Abdullahi to provide a comprehensive report on drug procurement and distribution at FTH Gombe. Necessary reforms must be implemented to tackle this urgent issue.

The NYCN calls on the NHIA and relevant government agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and establish accountability measures. Healthcare should be a fundamental right for all, and the people of Gombe State deserve sufficient medical supplies.

The NYCN will closely monitor the situation and take further action to protect the community's health and well-being. Immediate resolution is crucial to ensure patients receive the care they need, and allocated funds are used appropriately.
